MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – Wisconsin legislative Republicans passed a bill Wednesday along party lines in the Assembly to approve redrawn legislative maps.

The effort is being done ahead of a court-imposed deadline of March 15.

Gov. Tony Evers said on social media Wednesday that he would veto the maps that the Assembly approved, saying that he promised to fight for fair maps.

“Moving legislative district lines so GOP-gerrymandered incumbents get to keep their seats is just more gerrymandering,” Evers said.

Wisconsin’s Supreme Court will draw new maps if Evers and the Republican-controlled legislature can’t come to an agreement.

Democratic Rep. Lori Palmeri said that the bill voted on Wednesday was not fair or transparent for Wisconsin voters.

“At every turn, Legislative Republicans have tried to undermine our democracy and cement their power,” Palmeri said in a release. “This eleventh hour attempt to pass a map is their latest ploy to maintain their illegitimate majorities and protect their incumbents.”

Democratic Rep. LaKeshia Myers wrote on social media that the legislature didn’t work collaboratively on the new maps.

The social media account for Assembly Republicans reposted Evers’ social media message on the maps, writing that “99.7% is apparently not his maps. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.”
